Traveling is the best way to immerse yourself in a culture and doing it during the holidays is so much fun! Even though we can’t bring our class on a flight, we can still take them around the world to celebrate all the amazing holidays observed in other countries. This is a perfect activity before winter break, reviewing many skills, and it is so much fun! So pack your passport and get ready to take off to learn about holidays around the world!
Why it Matters
It’s important to celebrate a variety of cultures in the classroom for SO many reasons. Check out what these amazing third graders had to say from @missvin3‘s class! This is a great way to kickstart this unit with your own students to check their understanding and build upon it as they learn!
What to Pack
Get your students ready for their trip by packing their suitcases with learning materials, such as a note taking guide and a passport to stamp after visiting each country. Students will “fly” to each place and learn all about their holiday celebrations as they trek through the countries. This is a project based learning unit that can be set up in stations, done as a whole group, or worked on in small groups over several days. Crafts will be done at each country that they can pack in their suitcase before moving on to the next place. At the end, students can “unpack” their suitcase of learning and create a travel brochure about their favorite holiday.
Time to Take Off
When your students are ready to take off for their first designation, they will rotate in centers as they learn and celebrate the different countries’ holiday traditions. If you decide to do it as a whole group, everyone can bring their suitcase to the carpet or tables while you all learn about the holidays together.
However you’re grouped, students will work together to read or listen to the collection of stories and gather information about each country and their holiday and traditions. After they’ve finished taking notes, they will complete a craft to celebrate their learning!
