Are you looking for a super fun way to get in some meaningful writing this month? Well I’ve got the perfect writing craft for you and your students! Read on to find out the ultimate turkey themed activity you won’t want to miss out on this November.
It Starts With A Book
Any good writing first needs some inspiration. What better way than some amazing read alouds? I LOVE pairing a mentor text with a writing activity because why not extend the learning if you can?! Here are some of my favorite books to pair with these and build some anticipation for our fun writing craft!
A Plump and Perky Turkey by Teresa Bateman
This is an adorable story about a town who doesn’t have a turkey for Thanksgiving. They devise a plan to hire a turkey “model” to lure one in town for their feast, but what happens next will surprise you!
How to Catch a Turkey by Adam Wallace
A turkey running loose in the school is the perfect way to provide instant engagement to your students. In this book, kids do everything they can to catch the turkey without any casualties! It’s a hilarious story that has great illustrations that you and your students are sure to love.
Turkey’s Escape Plan by Julia Zheng
This turkey does NOT want to be dinner and so he plans to escape! With some help from his friends, he gears up for a getaway to save his life. The best part of this book is the complete twist at the end! Grab this adorable and fun writing prompt FREE by subscribing below! It goes perfectly with this story!

Turkey Trouble by Wendi Silvano
This book will be the catalyst for your writing craft so if this is the only one you read, it’s a great one! It begins a great discussion about what would YOU do if you were trying to go incognito to avoid getting eaten? Turkey does all he can to look like any other animal to not end up being the main course and you are sure to get some good laughs from this story.
Which brings us to the ultimate writing craft for the month of November – turkeys in disguise!!
The Perfect Disguise
If you haven’t already noticed, all of these books share a common theme of a turkey trying to save their life and not end up on the dinner table. This craft instructs students to write from the turkey perspective who is trying to come up with the perfect disguise!
We did it last year and I’ll tell you it is a MUST! I printed disguises for students to choose from and they completed the writing prompt. They had a blast, absolutely LOVED this writing activity, and our bulletin board was the talk of the school! If you wanted to take it a step further, you could create a family bonding project by sending it home! Whichever way you do it, the students will enjoy this writing practice and it’s super engaging. Put A Little Twist On It
Maybe your students want to put a spin on their craft and instead write theirs from a different point of view. I love opening up choices for my students as much as I possibly can because it gives them real ownership over their learning. In addition to the previous read alouds, The Great Turkey Race by Steve Metzger is another great book to share with your class. In this story, three turkeys actually WANT to be the thanksgiving turkey so they compete for a winner! Instead of dressing up their turkeys in disguise, they can dress them up to the nines and talk about why they should be the main course at the table. It’s a cute twist and gives them a fun option for how to hone in on their writing skills. Win win for us all!
