December in the classroom is magical… and exhausting. Between spirit days, school-wide events, and tiny humans with holiday sized emotions, it can feel like learning is the last thing on their minds. But knowing how to keep students engaged in December can make the difference between festive fun and total burnout. These practical tips will help you survive, and even thrive, until break. I’m here to help you maintain structure, spark joy, and make the most of the season, so let’s get to it!

Why You Should Keep Students Engaged in December
December isn’t just chaotic because of the classroom parties and sugar highs. It can actually be emotionally heavy for a lot of kids. While some are buzzing with excitement for winter break, others may feel anxious or even dread the long stretch away from the routine and safety of school. Home isn’t joyful for every child, and for some, it might mean less stability, less food, and more stress. That’s why it’s so important to keep things as consistent, calm, and connected as possible. We can still weave in the joy and magic of the season, but the foundation should be familiar routines, meaningful learning, and heart-filled moments that make our students feel safe and seen.
Routines to Keep Students Engaged
The easiest way to keep kids on track in December is to stay on track yourself. When everything else feels wild, routine is your best friend. I love sticking with our regular schedule, but giving it a seasonal spin. I’m talking about winter-themed math and literacy centers, holiday-inspired writing crafts, and festive yet educational activities that feel fresh without throwing off the flow. The predictability helps students feel grounded, while the seasonal twist keeps them engaged, feeling festive, and still excited to learn. Check out some of my favorites below!

Take Students Around the World
One of my favorite ways to keep students engaged in December is by celebrating diverse traditions from around the globe. It’s meaningful, educational, and adds just the right touch of magic to the season. My Holidays Around the World resource makes it easy to introduce 12 kid-friendly celebrations through simple guides, crafts, passports, and even travel maps. With differentiated materials like note-taking guides and travel brochures, plus an epic list of 79 holiday read-alouds, you can keep learning at the center while helping students appreciate global cultures. It’s festive and foundational. If you ask me, it’s exactly what December learning should be!
Make Festive Memories This December
Amid the busy December days, some of the most lasting classroom moments come from the small, meaningful festivities we plan. Whether it’s a cozy pajama day, a hot cocoa read-aloud, or a festive classroom transformation, these special touches create core memories your students will never forget. I like to sprinkle in simple, low-prep activities that bring joy without adding stress. Some ideas are holiday themed days, kindness challenges, or a class countdown to winter break. These moments build community, give kids something to look forward to, and remind them that school can be both safe and magical during this emotionally charged season.

Lead with Love
In December, flexibility is your superpower. Some days won’t go as planned, and that’s okay! Leading with love means understanding that kids are carrying big feelings, and sometimes, they just need a little extra patience and grace. Remember, your calm and compassion set the tone for the whole room. Keep your eyes on the prize: winter break. That well-deserved pause isn’t just a countdown for you, but a chance to recharge, reflect, and come back refreshed. You’re doing important work, and every challenge you navigate this month is a step closer to that joyful, restful break you truly deserve. Hang in there because whether you believe it or not, you’ve got this!
