Halloween is such an exciting time for students, but it can also feel overwhelming for teachers. October energy is at an all-time high, which makes keeping students engaged a challenge. That’s why I love using Halloween math and literacy centers to channel that excitement into fun, skill-based learning. These Halloween activities for K-2 classrooms are easy to set up, highly engaging, and perfect for kindergarten, first grade, and second grade.

Halloween Writing Center: Brew Some Magic
Students will be amazed as the magic appears before their eyes in this Halloween writing center! Using white crayon on their recording sheet, they’ll write high-frequency words, phonics patterns, or math facts. Then, when they color over it with crayons, markers, or watercolor, the “hidden” words magically appear! This activity is whimsical, hands-on, and keeps students excited to practice important literacy or math skills all October long.

This center is completely editable, so you can customize it for the exact words your class needs. It’s also easy to store in Michael’s task boxes for simple prep and organization. A Halloween literacy center that’s engaging and teacher-friendly!

Get creative this October with a Halloween writing and drawing activity your students will love! Each child chooses a pumpkin to draw and then writes a story to bring it to life. This is the perfect center for practicing descriptive writing, adjectives, and creative storytelling. With differentiated options included, this Halloween writing center works for kindergarten, first grade, and second grade learners. Plus, it’s an easy way to add seasonal fun without extra stress.

Halloween Rhyming Center: Feed the Pumpkin
Rhyming has never been so much fun! In this Halloween rhyming center, students “feed” a pumpkin the word that rhymes with the picture shown. Simply attach pumpkins to brown paper bags, tissue boxes, or containers, and students get to feed them their matches. For an extra sensory twist, place pumpkins inside a tub of corn kernels and let students dig for their rhymes! Add tongs for fine motor practice, and you’ve got a pumpkin literacy activity that will keep kids engaged all month long.
Halloween Flashlight Literacy or Math Game
Students will beg to play this spooky activity all October long! All you need are flashlights, your skill-based ghost cards, and a little Halloween vibe.
