Take Them Through the Process
As educators we know exactly how important the writing process is for students. It can also be a daunting task to teach them all the steps AND make sure they actually do them all. That is why I want to give you ALL the tools you need to help students work through the process to create a beautiful piece of writing!
Students will start with a brainstorming thinking map to get all those amazing ideas out. After brainstorming, students will begin their writing plan on their chosen topic. Once planning is done, it’s onto drafting! You’ll find a variety of writing styles included to meet your specific classroom needs. After drafting, they can work with peers to edit their writing before moving onto their final, or as we call it their “pretty copy”. This will be the beautiful piece that gets displayed for all to see. This is so important so try not to skip that editing step! You can learn all about how to make this process a breeze HERE! If you want a more in-depth guide to the writing process, you can learn all about that HERE!
Spark Creativity
How often are our students given creative freedom when it comes to writing? I hear SO often from upper elementary teachers that when students are asked to write to a creative prompt they REALLY struggle. While we have some great writing standards in the lower grades to help get students get really good at the fundamentals, we don’t spend too much time with creative writing. I think it’s really important to build in time for some great creative writing opportunities.
That’s where these fun monthly prompts come in! While there are some prompts for nonfiction writing and ways to spread kindness, there are also prompts included to help spark that creativity for students! From creative narratives about being stuck inside of a snow globe to teaching others the steps on catching a gingerbread man, students will LOVE sharing their creativity, while getting great practice writing.
