How often have you looked out at students working during center time only to see students who don’t know what to do, aren’t completing tasks, and are playing with their friends rather than learning? What if I told you you could create productive centers that actually work ALL YEAR LONG. Instead of chaotic, unorganized center activities that are a pain to prep, imagine having centers prepped for the entire year that are fun, engaging, and students are learning and growing. Sounds amazing right? Well you don’t have to just imagine it, because I’m here to share an easy center method. You will learn how to use a system that works and is sustainable, with engaging center activities that can be prepped once and used all year for students! Be sure to snag the must-have freebie in this post to help get you started!

The Method
Let’s begin with the simple method that will transform your center prep and activities into an enjoyable and easy experience for the whole year! After you have assessed your students’ phonics knowledge and skills, you will group students with like needs. For example, a beginning of the year group of first graders might be split up by needs such as letter/sound recognition group, CVC group, a CVCe group, a vowel team group, etc. After you have grouped students into similar skill groups, you will begin center prep for each group. Each group will have a colored bin they work in and each group has a color that matches their bin color. You can use anything you like, such as colors, numbers, or animals.
Now comes the prep! As your students work through skills, you will add the same activities and just change the skill all year. This makes differentiation and prep a breeze! Let’s say you have a group working on letter sounds, you are going to add letter sound activities for this group. When they are ready to move onto CVC words, you will change the skill in their bin but leave the same activities. At this point, you may be asking yourself, “Ok, that sounds great. But what are the activities?”
Before we move on to the activities, I want to quickly add that the maintenance of this system is quite easy. I typically do a weekly check-in on student progress and bins. This is the time when I assess how students are doing with different phonics skills and how the activities are doing in their specific bins. So now let’s dive into the easy, fun activities that can be used all year long for your students whether they are in kindergarten, first, or second grade!
The Activities
All of the activities in this section are low prep, engaging, and Science of Reading aligned. They provide great practice for each skill students need help with and are great differentiation tools to support you and your students!

Board Games require no prep and are all fun! Students grab a pawn, roll the dice, and read the word they land on! They take turns moving around the board and reading the targeted words. All phonics patterns are included for great practice and lots of fun! Students will love racing around the board and seeing who gets to the end first. There are also fun spots along the way that include moving ahead or even going back to start!
Fluency Poems are a FAN FAVORITE. They are simple targeted poems with a fun and simple story for students. The best part is they have comprehension questions to ensure that students can decode and understand what they read. Pair them with a timer and have students work on their fluency as they read. They LOVE these poems and challenging themselves!
Roll and Read is a go-to easy center that is perfect for partners. Give them a dice and watch them go! They also like to turn this into a challenge to see how quickly they can read a row of words. You can also add race cars and turn it into a real race! Line up the cars and see which one can make it to the finish line first by getting to the end of the row.
I Spy is an old-school activity with a twist! Super engaging and fun!
Mystery Phonics Puzzles are a HIT! They are no prep and all fun. Students will work on a targeted skill that they need more practice with, such as rhyming or letter sounds. They will match the puzzle pieces to reveal the mystery picture!
The beauty of this method and these center activities is that everyone is working on targeted skills at their level. They know exactly how to complete each activity because it never changes, and they are engaged because all these low-prep activities are hands-on! No more students interrupting groups or spending hours each week prepping! Simply move activities from bin to bin as students progress and move through skills! The best part is you can grab all these activities and more in the growing Science of Reading Centers Bundle!

Accountability
How does accountability work with this method? There are a number of easy and effective ways to hold students accountable during center time. One easy way that has proven to be very successful is with editable daily slides that show students exactly what is expected of them during center time. Must Do/May Do boards give students the time they need to complete expected centers and options for when they finish. Students LOVE completing their centers and it takes care of your accountability piece!
During those centers mentioned above, you can have students set a timer and play for a certain number of minutes. Once completed, you can have them record their answers and turn it in OR you can also have them take pictures of their game once finished as proof of completion.
Another easy successful setup for centers is the Unfinished Work System. Students can store unfinished work in their individual folders. You can also print a work completion sticky note that students can check off as they complete each center. We also build in time on Fridays for students to catch up on any work not completed for the week. Those students that completed all their work can have free choice time!
