It’s that time of year again—January hits, and suddenly the energy in your classroom feels like it’s dipped. The “mid-year slump” is real, and maintaining momentum with students can become a challenge. Don’t worry, though! With the right classroom management strategies, you can turn things around and bring the spark back into your space. So let’s dive into the mid year slump and some easy classroom management strategies to beat it!

Recognizing the Mid-Year Slump
First, let’s talk about what’s happening. The first part of the year is all about excitement. You’re getting to know the kids, they’re eager to please, and routines are fresh. But by the time mid-year hits, things change. Students might feel more comfortable, which can sometimes lead to them testing boundaries or simply losing focus. When we’re coming back from a long break and we may not remember all the rules, things can go awry. That’s where classroom management strategies for the mid-year slump come into play.
Conquering the Mid-Year Slump
The mid-year slump does NOT have to take control of your classroom. In contrast, with these easy classroom management strategies for the mid-year slump, you’ll be able to bring focus, fun, and energy back into your classroom. I love using daily slides to keep things organized, brag notes to motivate students, and a whole class rewards system to build teamwork! You can see examples and read more about them below!
Daily Slides: These are at letting students know EXACTLY what is going on and what they need. No more repeating yourself or setting timers because everything is already typed up and done for you! From the moment students walk into the room from the moment they leave, they know exactly what to expect for each part of their day. It’s amazing to help everyone get back into the routines.
Brag Notes: Shower your students with well deserved praise for their efforts in getting through this mid year slump. To foster a positive atmosphere, aim to praise five positive actions for every one critique. After all, it’s a super easy way to motivate students and keep everyone on track!

Whole Class Rewards – Rewarding students is so important to motivate them and it gives them experiences they can remember forever. These whole class rewards combine positive incentives and teamwork. Whenever students meet expectations, they’ll earn a piece of the puzzle to complete for their class reward. Each piece shows progress towards their goal and it’s so much fun watching it all come together! You can give your students all kinds of choices for rewards to vote on that are fun and FREE, such as Bring a Stuffy Day, extra recess, or Pajama Day.
Of course, the most important thing is to stay consistent. Stick with these strategies, sprinkle in some fun, and watch your students thrive!
Reintroduce Expectations
When we hit the inevitable mid year slump, it’s time to revisit those classroom expectations you set back in the fall. You don’t have to do a full-blown rules day, but a brief refresher can remind students of what’s expected. You can read more about the difference between a classroom reset or classroom refresh HERE!
One of my favorite ways to do this is with my Editable Classroom Procedure Posters and Presentation! There are over 60 procedures included to teach your students EVERYTHING from entering the classroom in the morning to cleaning up at the end of the day.

Get Creative with Consequences to Beat the Mid Year Slump
Classroom management isn’t just about rewards. Sometimes, we have to address negative behavior too, but this can be done creatively and without embarrassment. When students have big feelings that seem to be too much to handle, I encourage them to spend some time in our ‘Calm Down Corner’. Rather than calling a student out in front of the class, allow them to take a break, reflect on their choices, and come back ready to try again. This can help manage the flow of the classroom without interrupting everyone.

You can read all about setting up an area like this in your room in THIS post.
Have you tried logical consequences? It’s a no-nonsense management system that transforms classroom management. The consequences are clear and laid out for students. It teaches students how to take responsibility for their actions and alleviates stress for you. Check out the pack HERE!
Building a Growth Mindset Culture
Creating a classroom culture that fosters a growth mindset is another powerful strategy for managing behavior during the mid-year slump. Encourage students to embrace challenges and understand that mistakes are part of the learning process. One way to reinforce this is through language. Simple phrases like “You can’t do it… yet” or “Look how much progress you’ve made!” shift the focus from failure to growth.
A growth mindset can transform a student’s approach to learning from “This is too hard, I can’t do it” to “I’m up for the challenge and I won’t give up!” When your entire class possesses thoughts like this, the whole environment transforms into a super supportive space where students cheer and challenge each other every day. Class Dojo is an AWESOME, super entertaining resource that uses this video series to teach about what it means to have a growth mindset.

Keep Your Energy Up
Finally, one of the most important classroom management strategies for the mid-year slump has nothing to do with students and everything to do with you. The energy you bring to the classroom is contagious. If you’re feeling the mid-year blues, your students will feel it too.
Take care of yourself, refresh your classroom environment, and try switching up your routine. You might find that a simple change of scenery—like rearranging desks or adding some fresh bulletin boards—can re-energize both you and your students.
