Preparing for meet the teacher, in addition to all the other back to school prep, is A LOT to say the least. There can be tons of stress and pressure trying to prepare for the perfect event where families feel welcomed and get to know you. That’s why I have created this easy, stress free, step by step guide to help alleviate that stress and help you have the best back to school night EVER!

Getting to Know You at Meet the Teacher
Step one is all about you. One of the biggest things families want to get from meet the teacher is finding out about YOU. We can make this easy and seamless with a few simple, effective tools. My first favorite is a contact card with your information for families. Simply type and print things such as your email address, school extension number, etc. Additionally, you can also add the school attendance line phone number. A really nice hack is to print it on magnetic paper. It creates a magnet for families to stick right on the fridge!
Another easy way for families to get to know you is by creating a simple presentation of your hobbies and interests. I like to use THIS template and have it playing in the background as families explore the classroom.
And the last is a classic welcome letter, including simple things about you for families to get to know you a little better. I like to add my education, hobbies, things about my family, and interests. THIS pre-made template makes it easy to add your own information and keep it for years to come. Remember that these are just some easy ideas for you; use as many or as few as you would like! After all the important get to know you things are ready, it’s time to get student paperwork in order!
Prep Student Folders
Creating student folders with ALL the essential documents is the easiest way to ensure all families get access to all the forms they need and can return the ones that need to be sent back in completed. These folders also come in handy when you get a new student! You can simply provide the student with the folder and get all the important information you need, no matter when they join throughout the year.
Let’s dive into what to put in these folders for families. A welcome letter to families about your grade level is a great place to start. Other important documents include all those emergency forms, get to know you, student information, and even your welcome letter. These forms are editable, and it is easy to add your own information. There are even easy peel and place stickers to add to the folder so families know what they can keep at home and what needs to come back completed!

Set Up Supply Bins for a Stress Free Meet the Teacher
This next step is a GAME CHANGER for all those giant bags of supplies families bring in during meet the teacher. Use supply bins! This puts the sorting and organizing on families instead of you having to do all the work later. It gives them a task and makes it super easy for you when you need to find a home for all those things. Set up bins or baskets labeled for families around the room. You can spread them out or put them all near each other. We use THESE labels so students can independently sort their supplies and recognize where they are throughout the year. It’s an easy win win that makes a huge difference on that stressful night!
Gather Student Gifts
It’s always fun to give the new students a little gift. There are SO many fun, easy options out there. My favorite is recording The Night Before First Grade and putting it on a QR Code for families to scan and listen to the night before the first day of school. The students LOVE it! We also hand out ready confetti for them to put under their pillow the night before the first day. You can grab this read aloud template FREE by subscribing below and have your student gift ready to go without any stress!

Here’s the ready confetti, too! It also has a pre-made poem for students. All you have to do is stuff and go!
Stress Free Meet the Teacher Stations for the Win
The next step is a crucial one. Here is my secret to a successful, stress free meet the teacher night that families will never forget. Use stations! All these activities we’ve discussed and prepped for are all a part of meet the teacher stations that families LOVE! Get this when families rotate through stations like filling out forms, putting away school supplies, and more. You get more time to spend getting to know each family without the stress and pressure of other families waiting to talk to you! It is a game changer for meet the teacher night and alleviates ALL the stress.
Families start at the sign in station and grab their checklist. Subsequently, they’ll rotate through as many or as few stations as you would like to include and get ALL the important things done along the way!
Some other fun and easy station ideas include how we get home, a get to know the classroom scavenger hunt, a first day note, and classroom wish list! It’s got you covered so all you have to do is get to know families and HAVE FUN!
