The first day of school is a whirlwind of emotions—for both students and teachers. There’s excitement, nervous energy, and the anticipation of a fresh start. Whether it’s your first year in the classroom or your tenth, setting the right tone on day one lays the foundation for a positive and productive school year. So how do we ensure the first day of school is a success? I have three key components to focus on and it’s guaranteed to make the first day smooth and special. Let’s get into them!

Creating a Welcoming Environment
First thing is to create a welcoming environment. A warm and inviting classroom can ease first-day jitters and help students feel at home. Here are a few simple ways to make your space feel safe and welcoming on the first day of school:
-
Greet students at the door with a smile, a high five, or a friendly “Good morning!” This small gesture helps students feel seen and valued right away. I love using THIS to give students options on how they would like to be greeted. It’s a game changer!
-
Make your classroom inviting by using soft lighting, a cozy reading corner, or student name tags on desks. A welcoming environment encourages students to settle in comfortably. Setting up your classroom with your students in mind is crucial. You can read more bout that HERE!
-
Set clear expectations for behavior in a positive way. Instead of focusing on rules as restrictions, frame them as guidelines for success. This truly helps students get into the mindset of WHY the rules are present. One great strategy is to have students help create classroom norms together.

Routines for Success on the First Day of School
Routines and procedures are the backbone of a smooth-running classroom. While it’s tempting to jump straight into content, spending time on expectations early will pay off throughout the year. My favorite quote when it comes to this concept is ‘go slow to go fast”.
-
Introduce routines gradually. Instead of overwhelming students with a long list of procedures, introduce them as they come up naturally. For example, model how to line up for lunch before heading to the cafeteria. Check out all the tips for teaching routines and procedures HERE!
-
Incorporate fun icebreakers to help students get to know each other—and you! These activities build classroom community and set a positive tone. You can use these awesome team building and getting to know you activities for some first day fun!

-
Make learning engaging from the start. Whether it’s a read-aloud, a hands-on activity, or a team challenge, starting with something interactive sets the expectation that learning in your class will be fun and exciting. We love reading First Day Jitters with students and completing a feelings activity. This helps students understand that they may not be the only one feeling nervous, excited, or scared. We end the day with this and drink some Jitter Juice! They LOVE it!
And since we’re on the topic of success, set yourself up for it too with the Back to School Teaching Timeline! Planning for school supplies, management, meet the teacher, and more is all done for you in checklists just like these. Don’t stress during back to school! Remembering the First Day of School
The first day of school only happens once a year—why not make it special?
-
Capture the moment with a class photo or a first-day student selfie station. These can be fun to look back on later in the year.
-
Start a first-day journal. Have students write (or draw) about their hopes for the year ahead. It’s a great way to document their growth and reflect later on.
-
Take a moment to reflect. At the end of the day, jot down what went well and what you might tweak for next year. No first day is perfect, but each one is a learning experience!
No matter how the first day unfolds, know that you are making a difference. By creating a welcoming environment, establishing strong routines, and making the day memorable, you’re setting the foundation for an amazing school year.
