Literacy Center Organization
When it comes to literacy centers organization, the right setup can save you time and stress all year long. Use bins to hold layered phonics activities and other essential materials students need during center time. Personally, I love using THESE bins from Michaels, THESE zippered pouches, THESE labels, and your center activities. Check out some low prep ones HERE! You can often find the bins and other materials on sale during back to school season so be on the lookout!
To make your literacy centers organization system even more student-friendly, organize the bins using visual cues like colors, numbers, or animals. This helps students quickly find their materials without needing constant reminders or assistance. As far as literacy centers go, I personally prefer to organize by skill rather than by group. I love using editable bin labels to keep track of all my skills. Students are often working on a variety of skills at once, and organizing materials this way makes differentiation much easier. You can see an example of this below—and don’t forget to grab your free monthly storage labels to help you stay organized all year long!

The Secret Sauce
Now let’s talk about the secret sauce of literacy centers organization: how you set up your activities! The biggest time-saver (and sanity-saver) is to change the skill, not the activity. Prep once and use all year long! The beauty of this system is that the format of the activities stays the same, so students quickly become familiar with what’s expected. This familiarity builds independence and cuts down on the time you spend reteaching center directions.
But here’s the fun part—by simply switching out the skill being practiced, it feels fresh and exciting for students every time! It’s like playing your favorite game with a brand-new expansion pack—it’s still fun and familiar, but now it’s got a new twist that keeps everyone engaged.
Check out some fun activities we use with this secret sauce!

Upkeep of Literacy Centers Organization System

Each week, take a few minutes to swap out activities if needed, tidy up bins or pouches, and double-check that everything is still in good shape. This is also a great time to do a quick assessment—see how your students are progressing, notice which skills might need a little more practice, and make any small adjustments before the next week begins.
