Let’s talk about the why behind positive parent communication for teachers. We all know it takes a village—and that village starts at home. Whether families walk in with glowing past experiences or a little bit of baggage, we need them on our team to support their child. That’s why starting with positive communication from day one is a game-changer. If the first time they hear from you is about a missing assignment or a meltdown at recess…well, let’s just say it’s harder to build trust from there. Start strong, build connection early, and make the tough convos easier down the road. With that, let’s dive into three easy steps to establish communication!
Back to School Survey
Kick things off with a student survey during Meet the Teacher Night—it’s a simple step that sets the tone for positive parent communication. Yes, it helps you get to know the child, but more importantly, it gives families a chance to be heard. They get to tell you what matters most to them, and that kind of sharing builds trust right away. We like to create take-home folders with important documents, a little about us, and a lot about their child. Families feel seen, supported, and involved from day one—and that makes all the difference in building strong relationships that last all year. And for parents to have an easy way to contact you, I love creating contact cards to hand out!

Happy Calls for Positive Parent Communication
Next up: happy calls! Reaching out with something positive in the first few weeks—like how Johnny included a friend at recess—builds trust fast. Aim for 3–5 calls a week so every family hears something good. These small moments go a long way and make tougher convos down the line way easier.

Brag Notes
Our last step might be my favorite — Brag Notes! Brag Notes are the easiest way to have positive communication with families from day one, and as an added bonus – students LOVE to receive them! I always print a ton of these to keep on hand and as soon as I see something to brag about, I write it down and send it home with the student. Their face says it all when they receive these notes, and they can’t wait to share with their parents. Like the positive phone calls home, start handing these out during the first week for anything positive you see. Try to hand out one to each student and continue this easy system all year!
Positive parent communication and relationships are so important to the success of each child. As daunting as it is to establish connections with 25+ families, it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Just follow these three easy steps and watch your relationships with families flourish. I promise that by starting with the positive, it will make a world of difference!
