Coming back from a break can feel… a little like starting the school year all over again. You’ve got students who suddenly “forget” how to line up, routines that feel rusty, and energy that’s either way too high or even nonexistent. You’re tired, they’re distracted, and everyone’s a little out of sync. Sound a little too familiar? Trust me, you’re not alone. Every teacher I know goes through the after break slump. But here’s the good news: there’s one simple trick that can make all the difference. I’m here to share with you how to reset classroom routines after break the easy way!

The Trick? Re-Teaching Your Routines.
It might sound too simple, but hear me out. After a break, kids truly need a reset. They need reminders about what’s expected, how to transition, and what it looks like to be part of a classroom community again.
When we skip this step and jump straight back into academics, we end up frustrated because students aren’t listening and, worse, are not ready to learn. But when we intentionally pause, revisit expectations, and rebuild our classroom community, things fall back into place so much faster. Just like the beginning of the year, go slow to go fast.
Why This Works
✅Predictability builds safety – Students thrive when they know exactly what to expect.
✅Consistency builds confidence – Reteaching routines shows them they do know what to do, and they can thrive independently.
✅Community builds buy-in – When kids feel connected, they want to take ownership of their space and contribute positively to their environment.
Consequently, when these three pieces click together, the “slump” shifts into smooth, calm days.
Common Mistakes Teachers Make After Breaks
Even the best teachers fall into these traps:
❌ Jumping straight into academics, hoping kids “remember” expectations.
❌ Assuming classroom routines will just pick up where they left off.
❌ Overloading students with new content before re-establishing structure.
The result? Chaos, power struggles, a lot of unneeded stress, and falling behind on content.
While you’re re-norming expectations, make it easy on yourself with a checklist! It’s an excellent visual for you and your students so you all know exactly what needs to be practiced before diving back into learning. You can grab the Back From Break checklist below FREE!

Reset with Ease
Re-teaching doesn’t mean starting from scratch! It means intentionally revisiting the systems and routines that help your classroom run itself. Here are some simple ways to do that:
🌟 First, practice daily routines again – Begin by modeling and practicing simple procedures such as how to line up, transition between activities, or use supplies appropriately. Starting here sets the tone for smoother days ahead.
🌟 Next, incorporate community builders – Once routines are refreshed, layer in fun, low-prep activities that encourage students to reconnect with each other and rebuild a sense of classroom community.
🌟 Then, use visuals to reinforce routines – As students begin to settle back in, support them with concrete visual reminders. Charts, checklists, or posters give kids clear cues that boost confidence and independence.
🌟 Finally, add joy back into the day – To wrap it all together, sprinkle in quick activities that bring energy and excitement, such as a partner game, read-aloud, or team challenge. This keeps students re-engaged and eager to learn.
