Let’s be honest, May in the classroom can feel like a beautiful kind of chaos. Students are excited for summer, routines are slipping, and the countdown is officially on. But the end of the year doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. With the right mix of engaging read-alouds and simple, meaningful activities, you can help your students reflect, reconnect, and finish the year feeling proud of how far they’ve come.

End of the Year Read-Alouds & Activities
In this post, I’m sharing my favorite end-of-the-year read-alouds paired with fun, low-prep activities that make your last weeks together truly magical. These lessons help you celebrate growth, honor your classroom community, and end the year on the sweetest note. And don’t miss the must-have end-of-year freebie because it’s the perfect way to make your final days together even more special!
Celebrate Growth with Mrs. Spitzer’s Garden and a “What We’ve Learned” Reflection Activity
Mrs. Spitzer’s Garden is one of the sweetest end-of-the-year read-alouds because it beautifully captures the way students grow, change, and bloom throughout the school year. It’s the perfect story to kick off meaningful reflection during those last weeks of May. After reading, talk with your students about how each child in Mrs. Spitzer’s class represents a different “kind of flower” and how your own classroom garden has grown in so many amazing ways.
Then jump into a What We’ve Learned literacy activity. Create a class anchor chart and brainstorm all the skills, strategies, and accomplishments your learners have gained this year. Students will love “brain-dumping” everything they’ve learned. I’ve had students joy down things from reading stamina and story elements to decoding tricks they now use without thinking!
After reflecting together, let students choose a literacy topic they’re proud of and show what they know in their own creative way. They might write about a favorite skill, reread a book, and explain the central message, or talk about how their reading identity has changed. This choice-driven activity is such a powerful way to wrap up the year; it’s meaningful, celebratory, and so much fun.

Laugh & Reflect with My Teacher Likes to Say and a Class Keepsake Activity
My Teacher Likes to Say is the perfect lighthearted read-aloud for the end of the year. Kids love noticing all the funny things teachers say throughout the year, your silly phrases, your reminders, and all those little sayings that become part of your classroom culture. This book is a great way to celebrate those moments and bring some joyful reflection into your last weeks together.
After reading, create a class anchor chart and brainstorm all the things your students remember hearing you say this year. Prepare yourself, because this part is always hilarious! Once your chart is full, give each student a “My Teacher Likes to Say” reflection sheet so they can write and draw the most memorable thing you said.
This activity makes an adorable keepsake, is always full of giggles, and gives students a chance to look back on the year in a fun, meaningful way. It’s the perfect blend of celebration, connection, and end-of-year silliness.

Celebrate Community with Our Class Is a Family and a Class Family Keepsake Project
Our Class Is a Family is one of the best end-of-the-year read-alouds because it reminds students that your classroom has been more than just a place to learn. It’s been a community, a team, and a family. This story opens the door for students to reflect on what made your class special and all the ways they supported, encouraged, and grew alongside one another.
After reading, have students pair up and chat through a few simple reflection prompts, favorite memories, moments they felt proud, times classmates helped them, and what they’ll miss most about your class family. Then, let them complete the Class Family Keepsake Craft, where they write and illustrate their favorite memories from the year.
The best part? When everyone is finished, students can autograph each other’s books, turning this little craft into a treasured end-of-year memory they’ll keep forever. It captures your classroom community in the sweetest way and wraps up the year with connection, joy, and lots of smiles.

Celebrate Teamwork with The Most Magnificent Thing and End-of-Year Minute-to-Win-It Games
The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires is the perfect end-of-year read-aloud to highlight teamwork, problem-solving, and not giving up when things get tough. Students connect immediately with the main character as she works hard, gets frustrated, and eventually discovers greatness when you keep trying. It’s a great reminder to show them it’s just like they’ve done all year long in your classroom!
After reading, keep that teamwork energy going with Minute-to-Win-It stations! These quick, silly challenges are the perfect way to wrap up the year. You can set up as many stations as you’d like: stacking cups, racing cereal pieces, chopstick challenges, straw races, and more. Students can rotate in groups or compete as a whole class while cheering each other on.
It’s the ideal combination of teamwork, laughter, problem-solving, and pure end-of-year joy. Plus, it gives your class one last chance to celebrate how much they’ve grown academically, as friends, and teammates.
