There is something special about October in the primary classroom. The excitement is everywhere. Students are thinking about pumpkins, costumes, changing leaves, and all things spooky. However, as teachers, we know that October can also bring a little extra energy into the classroom. That is exactly why I love using October read alouds to channel that excitement into meaningful learning.

A great Halloween or fall read aloud gives students a chance to practice comprehension, build vocabulary, make connections, strengthen writing skills, and explore creative activities. Instead of simply reading a fun story and moving on, you can turn these books into unforgettable learning experiences with hands-on activities that students will talk about all year long. From pumpkin STEM challenges to Halloween writing crafts, phonics practice, math activities, and classroom discussions, these books are the perfect starting point for your October lesson plans.

Turn October Read Aloud into Meaningful Learning
The best part about using October read alouds is that one great story can become the foundation for an entire day of meaningful learning.
For example, a pumpkin story can easily turn into an exciting STEM challenge. Likewise, stories about funny monsters can inspire creative writing, while spooky characters can naturally lead to engaging phonics practice, math games, or meaningful classroom discussions.
As a result, students aren’t just listening to a story. They’re actively participating, creating, solving problems, and sharing ideas. Because learning is connected across multiple subjects, these experiences become much more memorable and meaningful.
Ultimately, that’s what makes October such a magical month in the primary classroom.
