Shake Off Spring Fever with This Spring Classroom Read-Aloud
This time of year students often have a serious case of “spring fever”! And Grumpy Monkey Spring Fever by Suzanne Lang is the perfect read-aloud to talk about it. This story helps kids recognize that it’s okay to feel off or distracted sometimes, but we can still make good choices even when we’re in a silly or restless mood.
After reading, invite your students to share what “spring fever” feels like for them. Then, jump into the Making Good Choices Digital Adventure Game! A fun, interactive way to review classroom expectations. In this digital SEL game, students make choices in real-life school situations and see the outcomes of their decisions play out. It’s the perfect mix of fun and reflection to help everyone ease back into routines.
This activity not only helps students think about their actions but also encourages empathy, responsibility, and self-control in a way that’s meaningful and engaging.

Spring Classroom Read-Aloud To Help Friendships Bloom
We Are (Not) Friends by Anna Kang is the perfect spring read-aloud to spark conversations about friendship and kindness. This story helps students recognize that even though friendships can be tricky sometimes, with communication, empathy, and teamwork, they can always bloom again.
After reading, brainstorm together as a class what makes a great friend. Create a chart titled “What Makes Friendship Bloom?” and record students’ ideas, things like sharing, including others, listening, and taking turns. Next, have students complete the Let Friendship Bloom writing craft by writing about how they can be a good friend. Afterward, students have a lot of fun decorating it with bright spring flowers. It’s the perfect mix of social-emotional learning and seasonal fun!
This activity encourages kindness, strengthens classroom community, and altogether it adds a cheerful spring touch to your bulletin board!

Spring Fun with Rain! and the Sidewalk Scoot Freebie
Rain! by Linda Ashman is a great story to help students reflect on attitude and perspective. This sweet book follows two characters on a rainy spring day; one who has grumpy thoughts and one with cheerful thoughts. It does an amazing job illustrating how our mindset can completely change how our day unfolds.
After reading, talk with your students about what kind of “rainy day person” they want to be. Then, take that message outside (or around the classroom) with the Sidewalk Scoot Freebie! This interactive movement activity gets students up and moving, while reviewing important skills and practicing teamwork. Each station gives students a quick challenge, helping them refocus and consequently make positive choices together.
It’s a fun, low-prep way to bring SEL and learning together, while shaking off that post-break spring energy.

Grow Together with The Tiny Seed and Grass Planting Activity
Celebrate your hard work and spring reset with one of my all-time favorite stories, The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle. This beautiful read-aloud is perfect for talking about growth mindset, patience, and new beginnings. After reading, discuss how, just like the tiny seed, we all undoubtedly grow and change in our own time.
Then celebrate spring by planting real seeds together! Have students decorate small paper houses or fences to go with their grass cups, and then plant their own seeds to grow throughout the rest of the school year. Each day, students can observe their plant’s progress and reflect on how they’re growing as learners, too.
This hands-on activity is such a powerful way to connect science, SEL, and growth mindset. Even more, it makes a lovely visual reminder that growth takes time, care, and consistency.
