Let’s be honest, teaching phonics in K–2 isn’t always straightforward. You can spend weeks working on letter sounds and word patterns, only to realize some students still mix up /b/ and /d/ or forget what short i sounds like. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Every primary classroom is filled with students who have different phonics needs and range on the huge phonics spectrum. And despite our best efforts, some skills don’t stick the first time. But here’s the good news! Once you learn how to identify those phonics gaps in K-2 and fill them with the right type of practice, you can build confident readers who finally connect all the pieces.

In this post, we’ll walk through how to:
✨ Spot phonics gaps before they grow
✨ Use Science of Reading aligned strategies to fill gaps
✨ Make every skill stick with multi-sensory, hands-on learning
So let’s dive in!
Step 1: Identify the Phonics Gaps
Before we can fill gaps, we have to find them. Sometimes they’re obvious. A student struggles to decode CVC words or can’t isolate sounds in a simple word. But often, the gaps are smaller and less visible.
Common signs your students might have phonics gaps:
-
They confuse beginning, middle, or ending sounds
-
They can read a word one day, but not the next
-
They rely on guessing instead of decoding
-
They struggle to blend or segment sounds
-
They can’t transfer skills from one pattern to another
Even with strong instruction, unintentional gaps can form when:
-
Curriculums move too quickly
-
Students are pulled out during key lessons
-
Review routines aren’t systematic
-
Or we assume students mastered a skill after one exposure
These small cracks can add up and lead to bigger challenges with decoding, spelling, and reading fluency down the line.

Step 2: Target Skills Systematically
Once you’ve identified which skills are shaky, the key is explicit, systematic instruction.
That means teaching one skill at a time, in a consistent sequence, and revisiting past skills regularly. Jumping between random phonics activities or skipping steps only widens the gap.
Science of Reading research shows that students learn best when lessons build from simple to complex. For example:
-
Letter sounds → CVC words → Blends and Digraphs → Long vowels → Advanced patterns
Following a scope and sequence keeps instruction predictable for you and your students, and helps everyone feel more confident and successful.
What the Science of Reading Tells Us
According to decades of research, students don’t learn to read through exposure alone. They need explicit, systematic, and cumulative instruction that connects sounds, symbols, and meaning.
The Science of Reading emphasizes that effective phonics instruction should:
-
Be explicit : skills are taught directly, not left to discovery
-
Be systematic : lessons follow a clear sequence that builds over time
-
Include cumulative practice : each new skill reinforces previous ones
-
Be multi-sensory : engaging auditory, visual, and kinesthetic pathways to strengthen memory
When we teach this way, students’ brains build strong neural connections for decoding and word recognition, which is the foundation of fluent reading. This is key to filling phonics gaps in K-2 before they potentially grow bigger!
Step 3: Fill Gaps with Multi-Sensory Learning
Multi-sensory instruction is where the magic happens. When students can see, say, move, and create while learning, they retain skills longer and apply them more automatically.
Each sense activates a different part of the brain, and together they make learning stick. This is crucial when working to filling phonics gaps, especially in the primary classroom. That’s exactly why I created the Interactive Phonics Growing Bundle! It turns proven Science of Reading strategies into engaging, ready-to-use classroom tools.
Inside, you’ll find:
-
🎶 Interactive Phonics Chants to build automatic sound recognition
-
✍️ Practice Pages that strengthen letter-sound connections
-
✂️ Hands-On Crafts that make phonics visual and memorable
-
🏆 Editable Hats & Awards to celebrate mastery and motivate learners
Each kit follows the same routine, so students know exactly what to expect. Additionally, students can work independently, which means fewer interruptions for you and more confidence for them.
Step 4: Reinforce and Celebrate Progress
Once your students begin mastering new phonics skills, don’t stop there! Regular review and celebration are essential to keeping those connections strong. Use quick morning review chants, small group warm-ups, or independent practice to revisit skills over time. Then celebrate each new milestone with a hat, badge, or award! Those small moments of success build motivation and confidence in even your most reluctant readers.
The Simple Way to Fill Every Phonics Gap
Filling phonics gaps in K-2 doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. With consistent routines, a multi-sensory approach, and systematic review, you can help every student build a strong foundation in reading! One sound, one pattern, one celebration at a time.
