Every March, classrooms across the country celebrate Read Across America. It’s joyful time to share stories, spark imagination, and build lifelong readers. This year, why not make your celebration even more meaningful by pairing reading with compassion? One of the most heartwarming Read Across America activities for kids is reading to shelter animals. It’s a simple idea that brings huge benefits to both kids and pets.

Why Reading to Animals Works Magic
Reading aloud can feel intimidating for some students, especially early readers who are still gaining confidence. But when children read to animals, dogs, cats, or even rabbits, something special happens. You see, animals listen without judgment. They don’t correct pronunciation or rush through the pages. As a result, children feel safe to practice, make mistakes, and improve at their own pace.
Plus, these quiet reading moments can help calm nervous shelter pets and prepare them for adoption. It’s a win-win!
Read Across America Activities: Benefits for Kids
-
Builds confidence in reading fluency and expression
-
Promotes empathy, patience, and social-emotional skills
-
Makes reading fun and purposeful
-
Connects literacy learning with community service

Furthermore, when students realize their voices can comfort a lonely animal, reading becomes powerful and personal.
Read Across America Activities: Benefits for Animals
Shelter environments can be noisy and stressful. Regular reading visits help pets become more comfortable with human voices and interactions. Over time, these animals often become friendlier, calmer, and more adoptable. Reading truly gives them hope for a forever home.

How to Participate with Read Across America Activities
You can join in on this amazing movement in several ways during Read Across America Week or even year-round!
-
Check with local animal shelters
Many shelters host “Read to the Animals” or “Paws for Reading” programs during March. Simply search “read to dogs and cats” along with your city name to find one nearby. -
Partner with your local library
Some libraries run regular reading-to-therapy-dog programs. These can be great classroom field trips or family activities. -
Create your own classroom version
Can’t make it to a shelter? No problem! Invite students to bring in photos or stuffed animals to read to in class. It’s a fun, low-stress way to capture the same magic. -
Support from afar
If visiting isn’t an option, you can still support shelters through donations or by sharing stories about adoptable animals. Organizations like Petco Love and local humane societies often run literacy-related initiatives that teachers can connect to.
Students will come across some magnificent words while reading. A great way for students to build their vocabulary is keeping a journal close by to jot down new words. We love using our Word Collector Journals just for this. Grab your FREE journal below!
